Mitchelton-Scott's Adam Yates has taken the victory of the Queen stage at the CRO Race and has claimed the GC lead of the race.
The short stage took the riders over a 135-kilometre route that featured more than 3300 metres of climbing and a mountain finish. A group of eleven riders established the escape of the day but it was caught at around 50 kilometres to go, after which 12 new riders made a move, including Brent Bookwalter and Yates.
On the last climb of the day, Matteo Badilatti made an efficient move but soon Miles Scotson and Bookwalter took Yates to him and with 4.7-kilometres to go the Briton changed the pace and went by himself. He crossed the finish line 10 seconds ahead Davide Villella and Víctor de la Parte, taking the lead of the General Classification.
"The team was so good today and the whole week," said Yates. "We've been fighting for a stage and finally we got it today. This was always the main stage for me, most of the other stages were sprint stages.
"After the Canadian Classics and before the Italian Classics, this race fit into the calendar perfectly so here we are and here we are with a victory. It's a good day and hopefully, it'll be a good week. One more day tomorrow."
