Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) has extended his lead on the General Classification of the Tour of Guangxi after taking the victory of the third stage.

The peloton went through a 143-kilometre long circuit on the third day of competition in the Chinese race. Bora-hansgrohe controlled the pace of the pack throughout the entire stage to force a final sprint and give Ackermann the chance to keep the leader's jersey.

During the last kilometres, there were several attempts to attacks but they were all neutralised. Ackermann showed once again to be one of the best sprinters at the moment by beating Alexandr Ruabushenko (UAE Team Emirates) and Mateo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) to take the day's victory.

"The third stage was harder than it was last year, and the parcours wasn't necessarily one for the sprinters," explained the German rider. "The plan was to stay with Trentin and be within the first ten riders to get over the last climb. That wasn't an easy feat, because the ascent was quite hard.

"I tried to follow Trentin because we knew he was strong and in the end, it was the right decision. We wanted to come here to win a stage, and now we've achieved that. After my two second places in the first few stages, I feel less pressure now that I've taken a win here. Thanks to the entire team for the great support. I'm happy that I've been able to reward their work with this win.
