Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) has taken the victory at the Japan Cup road race one week after getting his first Monument win at Il Lombardia.

The 144.2-kilometre long race started with an escape of eight riders that included Giulio Ciccone, which favoured Mollema as he could sit in the peloton without doing any heavy work. The work of other teams brought the pack together later on but the several climbs of the Kogashi forest made it smaller.

With two laps to go, the Dutchman of Trek-Segafredo made an acceleration and only EF Education First's Michael Woods could follow. The duo worked together to built a good gap and Mollema was the fastest at the final sprint, taking as such his second victory in the race.

"I am super happy with the win. It was a hard race!" said the rider. "The sprint went really well; I think it surprised him a little – I did a good sprint. It's a nice way to finish the season after Lombardy last week already; it's always a good atmosphere in Japan and great fans.

"I felt really good the whole day myself; in the last weeks, months already actually, but today especially the legs were good. It's a nice way to finish the season."
