Deceuninck-Quick-Step's CEO Patrick Lefevere has confirmed to Belgian media that Sam Bennett is signing for the formation.

The rumours of the Irish champion's move to the Belgian team have been going for months but nothing has been formalised. Reportedly, Lefereve and Bennett had reached an oral agreement just before the Tour de France, but Bora-hansgrohe blocked it and then suggested and exchange of the Irishman for the Colombian sprinter Alvaro Hodeg, something that Lefevere completely ruled out.

Some weeks later, the situation seems to have improved. "It is moving, in a positive sense," said Lefevere to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad
. "Of course, you are only certain when you have a signed contract in your hands. But yes, it is almost there.

"This is a good thing too because this matter has been dragging on for so long. I suspect at Bora-hansgrohe they will be waiting for as long as possible to make Bennett nervous and make him pay. But in the end, they will realise that you can't do much with a rider that wants to leave. So I foresee a happy ending."

The Irishman has taken stage victories in races like the Tour of Turkey, the Giro d'Italia, the Vuelta a España, Paris-Nice and the BinckBank Tour, among others and his transfer would include also the signing of New Zealander Shane Archbold, who is one of Bennett's lead-out men.

"Of course we have two strong sprinters with (Fabio) Jakobsen and Hodeg," said Lefevere. "But they are still young. And with 286 competition days per year, it is not an exaggerated luxury to have three in the house."

The CEO of the team is also happy for Bennett. "I thought this whole impasse was a shame," he said. "Especially for the young man. 'Ever since I was twelve, I have posters in my room of the team and my great idol Tom Boonen,' he told me. 'This is my dream team'. And that he could not go there..."
