Corendon-Circus' Mathieu van der Poel wants to face new challenges in his 2020 season and wants to start in the Vuelta a España for the first time.

The winner of the 2019 Amstel Gold Race is at the moment focused in the cyclocross season but he also has a moment to think about the challenges he would want to face in the upcoming season. The Dutchman has already stated that his main objective for next year will be to get a medal in the mountain bike event of Tokyo 2020, he also would want to start in the Spanish grand tour.

Van der Poel's team Corendon-Circus has the hopes of getting a wildcard for the 2020 edition of the Vuelta a España, which will start in the Netherlands. "That has indeed been discussed," said the rider to Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. "I like new challenges. Riding in a grand tour can indeed be the next challenge."

The 2020 season for Van der Poel will look similar to his 2019 when he finished his cyclocross season in February and then started riding road races. He then had an outstanding spring in which he finished in the fourth position of Gent-Wevelgem, won Dwars door Vlaanderen, took the fourth place at the Ronde van Vlaanderen, won the Brabantse Pijl and the Amstel Gold Race and took the overall victory at the OVO Energy Tour of Britain.
