Corendon-Circus' Mathieu van der Poel has taken his third European title in a row at the cyclocross championships in Silvelle, Italy.

The Dutchman was once again the strongest rider in the competition and he was able to beat Eli Iserbyt, who was the other big favourite for the event, at the end of the day. This is the third cyclocross European title in a row for Van der Poel.

"I am happy I got the jersey, but it was not easy," said the rider at the end of the competition. "It was difficult to make a difference in this course. But above all, I am happy that I was able to finish it off. This victory means a lot to me.

"I have many goals in 2020, but I am still focusing on the cyclocross before I prepare for the spring on the road and for the Olympic games, where I will participate in the mountain bike event."

Iserbyt and Laurens Sweeck -who also took the third place in the 2018 European championships- stepped on the other two places of the final podium.
