Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) has already an outline of his 2020 season in which he will have three goals: the Giro d'Italia, the road race of the Olympics of Tokyo 2020 and the World Championships of Martigny.

The French rider has never started in the Italian grand tour while has been at the start line of the Tour de France consecutively since 2013. Now he wants to try new challenges and has decided that the Giro d'Italia fits better in his goals for 2020.

Bardet will start his season at the Santos Down Under (January 21-26) in Australia, then he will kick off his European season at the Tour International cycliste du Var et des Alpes Maritimes (February 20-23) and the Boucles Drome Ardeche (February 29/March 1). The rider will also start in the Vuelta a España, but skip the Tour de France.

"I have never hidden my desire to participate in the Giro d'Italia in my best condition, with the desire to shine," Bardet explained. "It is time to open new horizons, and dividing up the season with these three major objectives is exciting. It was not easy to give up the Tour de France, which has brought me so much, and which is a race that I love deeply. But it seemed like a good time to open a parenthesis to the beautiful story that connects me to this race, with the intention of coming back even better next year.

"My 2020 racing program, built in coordination with the management of the AG2R La Mondiale team, is coherent and ambitious, and I am looking forward to returning to racing in Australia."
