Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) took the victory in the third edition of the Shanghai Criterium of the Tour de France.

Several outstanding riders of the peloton were a start line for the race including the winner of the 2019 Tour de France Egan Bernal (Ineos), Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma), Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida), Thomas De Gendt and Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal).

Seven men formed the early escape of the day, including Bernal and Nibali, who wanted to take as many points as possible in the intermediate sprints and which at the end gave him the win in the points classification. Behind them, Mitchelton-Scott worked hard to bring the pack together so Matteo Trentin could fight for the final victory.

The front men were caught with 12 kilometres to go and soon after Kruiswijk launched an attack and was followed by Ewan, Trentin and De Gendt. The quartet arrived together to the final kilometre and the Australian rider showed to have the better legs, just as he did at the Champs-Elysees stage at the Tour de France.

Trentin and Kruijswijk completed the podium of the competition.
