Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) was chosen as the cyclist of the year in the Netherlands and he's already considering to ride the Tour de France in 2021.

The rider already has an outline of what his 2020 is going to look like: Spring Classics, Tokyo Olympics and possibly the Vuelta a España. "Next year I will not ride the Tour anyway because I want to start in the Games on the mountain bike and both events coincide on the calendar," said the rider to Dutch website NU.nl.

"Maybe participating in the Vuelta a España can be an option, but I'm not yet busy with that. It could certainly be that I will be at the start of the Tour de France 2021, but nothing has been decided on that either."

Van der Poel is also inspired by Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), one of his main rivals in cyclocross and who had a successful transition to road racing -which included one stage win in the Tour de France. "Although I was certainly not watching it with jealousy, it is very beautiful what he has shown," said the Dutchman.

"Wout and I pull ourselves together and we achieve a high level. His performance in the Tour is for me an indication of what I could do in the race. It makes me dream a bit. Like: if Wout could win that sprint, I would also normally be there..."
