Jumbo-Visma's Tony Martin will not compete at the time trial of the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020.

The German time trial specialist took the silver medal at the fight against the clock of the Olympics of London 2012 and has won four times the World Time Trial Championships. But the rider doesn't think he could perform well in the Tokyo course and prefers to focus on the World Championships.

"My manager has been there," said Martin to German TV station MDR. "He looked at the course and described it as extremely heavy. It hurts me because I've always thought that the Olympic Games are very special."

The rider has chosen to instead put the time trial of the World Championships as one of the goals for his 2020 season. The competition will take place in Switzerland, a country where he lives for most of the year.

"I will skip the Olympic and I am going to prepare myself 100% for the World Championships," he added. "I see more opportunities for me there."
