Team Direct Energie has announced that it will not be at the start line of the Giro d'Italia in 2020.
The French team finished the 2019 season at the top of the Professional Continental ranking, which gives it access to all the events of the WorldTour calendar in the upcoming season. But the team wants to balance its own calendar and it has taken the decision to define other objectives.
"After a discussion with the sports management, we have decided not to go (to the Giro d'Italia)," said Direct Energie's Manager Jean-René Bernaudeau. "While we were delighted to see our first place in the ProContinental ranking last October, by then our recruitment was almost complete. We didn't have enough time to adjust effectively.
"We would put ourselves in danger, at a sportive level, if we went there. The team is not enough to able to be successful in Milano-Sanremo, the Flanders races, the Giro and the Tour de France."
The team -being French- wants to take a strong team to the French grand tour and this closes the option for the Italian competition.
