Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert is ready to return to competition and he will do so at cyclocross in the Azencross in Loenhout, Belgium.

Although the return of the rider was almost confirmed with weeks of anticipation, a final check-up with the doctors gave him the green light for the event. "I am looking forward to returning to the bustle of the (cyclo)cross," said Van Aert to Belgian website Sport.be. "On training, I have felt for a while that things are going in the right direction, but it is nice to be racing again.

"Loenhout is just one of the nicest events to return. Nice and close to home. I have been watching it since childhood, the atmosphere during period of the end of the year is always good here. On top of all, I have already won here two times as a professional."

Although Van Aert has been on the podium of the event at the last five editions, he doesn't think there's going to be a sixth time for now. "I don't expect much from it," he explained. "Specific cross-country trainings are not on the program this winter. In November I did the course and the week before Loenhout I had two training sessions in the forest programmed. That's it.

"Cyclocross is still the best thing that there is, but I just want to have fun this winter. I want to use the cross to get better. In terms of results, it will probably be a lost year."
