Trek-Segafredo's Ruth Winder has taken the overall victory at the Santos Women's Tour Down Under.

The American national champion took the lead of the General Classification at the third stage, after winning the challenging route of the day that took the peloton between Nairne and Stirling. Winder started the last stage of the race with an advantage of seven seconds over Sunweb's Liane Lippert and Mitchelton-Scott's Amanda Spratt and Trek-Segafredo did a good job defending that lead.

"Every bike racer needs a really strong team," said the rider at the end of the race. "This is not a single-person sport, and It's a shame I can't bring them all onto the podium with me."

Winder had a moment of fear during the last stage when Lippert took the bonus seconds of the first intermediate sprint, reducing the advantage of the America to only four seconds. But Trek-Segafredo worked together and Lotta Henttala won the second intermediate sprint and Winder won the third.

"I felt a lot of nerves before the race, but during the race, I just felt excited to try and do it," Winder explained. "I knew I had a really strong team leading me out so I just had to try and finish it off. We were happy to let the breakaway go, especially because Liane (Lippert) was sprinting really well."

"To win a stage in a stage race is really, really special, but to win a GC doesn't really happen very often, so I'm really, really happy."

Lippert and Spratt stepped on the second and third places of the final podium, respectively.
