UAE Team Emirates' Jasper Philipsen finished in the second position on the first stage of the Tour Down Under and took the lead of the young rider classification.

The rider achieved his first victory at the WorldTour level at the 2019 edition of the Australian race, and he was close to repeat his feat in the first stage in 2020, but Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Sam Bennett beat him to the finish line in Tanunda. But the Belgian rider was the best young rider after the first day of competition.

"I launched my sprint quite early and pulled out a good advantage but felt the other sprinters coming back as we reached the line," Philipsen commented. "I did everything I could.

"We have a great team here and they did a nice job to get me in the right position for the finish. We will aim for more over the next few stages. Unfortunately we lost Riabushenko during the stage who had a crash so we wish him the best."

Philipsen's teammate Alexandr Riabushenko crashed during the stage and was brought to the hospital with a suspected broken wrist. The second stage of the race will take the peloton between Woodside and Sterling over a 135.8-kilometre ride on a day that favours puncheurs.
