Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) has taken his second stage victory in the 2020 edition of the Vuelta a San Juan.

The fourth stage of the Argentinian race was the first encounter of the peloton with the climbs as it went through a 185.8-kilometre stage that features one ascent of the third category and two of the first category, all midway.

The first escape was formed after 70 kilometres into the stage and included names like Robin Carpenter, Filippo Ganna, Matteo Busato, Alain Quispe and Vladimir Ilchenko, among others. This group was caught 20 kilometres later and the pack rode together until the descent of the day.

With around 50 kilometres to go, Carpenter tried his luck again -this time with the company of Peio Goikoetxea- and built a gap of around one minute with the peloton. The Spaniard of Fundacion Euskadi was the first to give up but soon he was followed by the rider of Rally Cycling with around three kilometres to go.

The stage came to a fast finale in which UAE Team Emirates did an outstanding job for Fernando Gaviria, who delivered and took his second victory in this edition of the race.

The winner of the first stage of the Vuelta a San Juan, Rudy Barbier (Israel Start-Up Nation) finished in the second position and Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Alvaro Hodeg crossed the line in the third position.

Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) remains on top of the overall classification ahead of Filippo Ganna.
