German rider Liane Lippert (Team Sunweb) has taken the victory of the first race of the WorldTour calendar: the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

The race was 121 kilometres long in Geelong and the weather made it a lot more complicated than expecting as the peloton had to stand very strong winds and rain. The competition started with an escape of two but after the first sprint point, the pack went back together.

A new escape was formed soon afterwards and it stayed in front until the last ten-kilometre mark, when the riders faced the Challambra climb. With five kilometres to go, Lippert launched a strong attack that nobody could match and crossed the finish line 15 seconds ahead of Arlenis Sierra (Astana) and Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton-Scott).

"The team did such a good job from the beginning, and they protected me through the whole day," said Lippert. "We’re used to the tough conditions so it was good for us, and we made the race hard in the wind.

"I felt really good so I attacked on the final uphill part after the bridge and I never looked back. It’s amazing, I can’t believe I’ve won my first WorldTour race. The team played a really important role in the finale; without them I couldn’t have won today."
