The Tour de France has announced the three opening stages of the 2021 edition of the race, which will be held in Denmark.

The French grand tour will go farther north than ever before as it goes to Denmark. La Grande Boucle will open with a 13-kilometre individual time trial that will take the riders through the streets of Copenhagen and that is expected to be fast until the 4-kilometre mark, when a sharp curve will put their skills to the limit.

The second day of the Danish adventure will start in Roskilde, the old capital of the country, and will be a day for the classics specialists, although the will have to survive the big chances of echelons. On the last stage in Denmark, the peloton will ride through a 182-kilometre route to Sonderborg and that will include some of the pintoresque fjords landscapes that the public are expecting from the country.

"The first few days of the Tour de France often set the tone and atmosphere of a race that develops into whatever the riders want to make of it over the following three weeks," said Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France. "It is an exciting prospect to think that in July 2021 we will be applying the final touches to the start in the heart of a city that breathes and lives cycling.

"The first three stages will showcase the landscapes of Denmark and give rise to a wide range of scenarios in which power riders, echelon experts and sprinters will all get a chance to shine — a compendium of bicycle racing on flat terrain."
