Jumbo-Visma's Dylan Groenewegen has taken the win of the first stage at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.

The first stage of the Spanish race was set to be a day for the fast men despite the third-category climb that the route featured in the middle. The escape of the day was formed within the first 50 kilometres and included names like Julen Irizar, Cedric Beullens and Cristian Scaroni.

The front men took a gap of more than two minutes with a pack that was led by teams with strong sprinters like Jumbo-Visma and Deceuninck-Quick-Step. With 14 kilometres to go, only Irizar and Beullens remained in front but their adventure was finished four kilometres later.

Edward Ravasi (UAE Team Emirates) tried to surprise the pack with three kilometres to go, but the peloton was too fast for him. Deceuninck-Quick-Step took the front of the pack at the last kilometre and put Jakobsen in a good position, but Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) overtook him at the last moment.

UAE Team Emirates' Alexander Kristoff, Ineos' Ben Swift and Fundacion Orbea's Juan Lobato completed the top five of the day.
