Total Direct Energie's Niccolo Bonifazio has sprinted to victory in the second stage of the Saudi Tour, UAE Team Emirate's Rui Costa has kept the lead of the General Classification.

The Sadus Castle was the perfect backdrop for the start of the 187-kilometre stage in which four riders broke away in the first kilometre. This group created a gap of more than five minutes with the pack and teams like UAE Team Emirates, Arkea-Samsic and Bahrain McLaren took control of it to force a fast finale.

Bonifazio was the fastest man at the last slightly uphill stretch and crossed the line ahead of Bahrain McLaren's Phil Bauhaus and Arkea Samsic's Nacer Bouhanni. Costa arrived to the finish with the pack and managed to remain at the top of the overall classification.

"It's a great victory," said Bonifazio. "I am very happy with the reaction that I had after my fall of yesterday. During the stage, I stayed in the wheel of my teammates to be the best placed in the last kilometre. I would like to thank the whole team for the work of today."
