Bahrain McLaren's Phil Bauhaus has taken the overall victory at the first edition ever of the Saudi Tour.

The German rider won two stages of the newly created race: on the third day over a route between Riyadh and Al Bujairi and on the last day of competition. The rider took the two victories on sprint finales in which the help of his teammates was of vital importance, including the one of Mark Cavendish.

"It’s just an awesome feeling," said Bauhaus. "I’ve never experienced to win a GC. It’s really something special for me. And win straight at the first race it’s fantastic. Yesterday I was very unlucky with the flat tyre and today we showed again how strong we are. I’m super happy with today’s stage win.

"I couldn’t have done it without the team. They were super strong in every situation to help me. They worked all day. Also, the former World Champion Mark Cavendish did a great job for me today. It’s my first ever overall win."

Arkea Samsic's Nacer Bouhanni and UAE Team Emirates' Rui Costa took the second and third overall positions respectively.
