Circus-Wanty Gobert-Tormans' Xandro Meurisse has taken the win at the opening stage of the 2020 Vuelta Ciclista a la Region de Murcia.

The opening stage of the two-day race was 177.6 kilometres long between Los Alcazares and Caravaca de la Cruz over a course that featured one climb of the first category, two of the third category and a climbing finish. Meurisse was part of the escape of the day, which took a lead of more than ten minutes over the pack.

Despite the many attempts of attacks in the front group, the Belgian was the strongest at the last kilometre and took his first victory of the season -along with the lead of the General Classification. "When you go into the escape after 20 kilometres of racing, you know that it will be a long day," said the rider.

"But everything ran smoothly and the right riders from the right teams were in front. We soon understood that our escape group could be successful until the end. In the exciting finale, I saw a number of dangerous riders, but I was also watched. Despite my many attempts, it was very difficult to get away.

"With the team we had studied well the last climb and I knew perfectly how to position myself. The last 75 metres were very steep but I could finish it with a final effort. Tomorrow I will be in a whole new situation. For the first time I will defend the leadership. I am confident that I can do it well at Alto Espuña and I am counting on my strong team!"
