Arkea-Samsic's Nairo Quintana has taken the victory of the Mount Ventoux stage at the Tour de la Provence.
The third stage of the French race had the potential of being a day packed with action, particularly on the last climb of the Mount Ventoux, and it didn't disappoint. The escape of the day included names like Johan Jacobs (Movistar), Bryan Alaphilippe (St Michel-Auber93) and Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) and the latter was the last survivor of it and was left alone in the first slopes of the last ascent.
Meanwhile, teams with strong climbers like Jumbo-Visma, Arkea-Samsic, Cofidis and Ineos took the lead of the pack to set a good rhythm and catch the escapee. Cavagna was caught with seven kilometres to go and metres later, Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) launched a strong attack that nobody could follow.
Behind, riders like Alexey Lutsenko, Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana) and Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) tried to work together to catch the Colombian of Arkea-Samsic. Quintana built a gap of more than one minute with the chasers and crossed the finish line by himself, taking not only the victory of the day but also the lead of the General Classification.
Lutsenko and Carthy crossed the finish line in the second and third places while Vlasov did it in the fourth position and Eddie Dunbar (Ineos) completed the top five of the day.
