Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) has started his season with a stage victory at the Vuelta a Andalucia/Ruta del Sol. The rider crossed the uphill finish line ahead of Bahrain McLaren's Mikel Landa.

The first stage of the Spanish race was 173.8 kilometres long between Alhaurin de la Torre and Grazalema over a difficult route that featured four climbs of the third category and one of the first category before a descent and another climb up to the finish line.

Due to the climbs of the day, many riders formed part of the front group at different moments, including names like Loïc Vliegen, Willie Smit and Kobe Goossens. The last of the escapees was caught with 10 kilometres to go just as the first category ascent started.

Shortly after, Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain McLaren) attacked and crated a gap of more than a minute over a selected group that featured riders like Jack Haig (Mitchelton-Scott), Ion Izagirre (Astana) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain McLaren). Fuglsang attacked in the last kilometre -on the cobbled stretch of the final climb- and he left Landa behind, which gave him the victory of the day.

The Dane also took the lead of the General Classification of the Spanish race.
