Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Fabio Jakobsen has taken the victory at the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve.

The peloton went from Portimao to Lagos at the first stage of the Portuguese race, over a rolling route of 195.6 kilometres. The breakaway of the day was formed by three riders: Diego Lopez, Alvaro Trueba and Pedro Paulinho, and it was reeled back by the pack just before the 10-kilometre banner.

Team Sunweb set a high rhythm in the last kilometres to help its sprinter Cees Bol and it was joined by other formations like CCC Team, Fenix-Alpecin and Deceuninck-Quick-Step. The short climb in the final stretch managed to reduce the numbers in the pack, but all the competitive sprinters managed to arrive with the peloton to the flat part leading to the finish line.

Deceunick-Quick-Step's Fabio Jakobsen played it smart and followed several wheels during the last kilometre before starting his own effort, which left Elia Viviani (Cofidis) and Matteo Trentin (CCC Team) fighting for the second position. Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) and Jon Aberasturi (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), completed the top five of the day.

The winner of the day -which also won recently the last stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana- also took the lead of the overall standings.
