Team Sunweb's Cees Bol has been the strongest rider in the final sprint of the third stage at the Volta ao Algarve.

The sprinters were bound to shine once again on the third day of the Portuguese race and that was exactly how the stage developed. The peloton faced a 201.9-kilometre course that included some climbs in the first kilometres, but nothing that could cause significant damage.

The escape of the day was formed by Gotzon Martin (Fundacion Euskadi), Aleksandr Grigorev (Atum General-Tavira-Maria Nova Hotel) and Tiago Antunes (Efapel). The trio was caught with 20 kilometres to go and soon after there was a crash that affected three Trek-Segafredo riders: Koen de Kort, Jasper Stuyven and Edward Theuns.

The three men were checked by the race doctors at the spot and later on were seeing back on their bikes, but they lost all options to fight for the final sprint. Teams like Deceuninck-Quick-Step, Sunweb and Lotto Soudal took the lead of the pack in the last kilometres for their own sprinters.

Sunweb's Cees Bol was the fastest and the strongest at the final sprint -despite starting from very early, and crossed the finish line ahead of Sacha Modolo (Fenix Alpecin) and Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick-Step).

Remco Evenepoel arrived to the finish with the pack and maintains his lead in the General Classification of the race.
