Tiesj Benoot (Team Sunweb) has finished the first stage of Paris-Nice in the third place and is currently in the second position of the General Classification.

The Belgian was part of a late breakaway with Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) and worked hard to stay away from the peloton. The duo was joined in the latest kilometres by Max Schachmann -who won the stage- and Dylan Teuns but Benoot finished in the third position of the day and took the second GC position due to the bonus seconds he took along the way.

"I was thinking of taking some seconds and after the small downhill we had 20 seconds on the group behind," said Benoot at the finish line. "We wanted to keep the pressure on as a team, so I kept riding with Alaphilippe.

"In the final a few riders attacked and joined us, so I just tried to go for it at around 800 metres to go. I misjudged the last corner a bit, lost momentum and took third. The whole team worked really well today. With five out of 16 guys in the front echelon it was really good; it’s hopeful for the rest of the week. We’ll take GC day-by-day but the first day was good so far, so we’ll keep going."
