UCI President David Lappartient has shown concerns about the continuation of the calendar due to the coronavirus, particularly of the grand tours.

After several races have been forced to be postponed to avoid the spread of the coronavirus and others are taking place "behind closed doors" like Paris-Nice, the president of cycling's governing body talked about his worries about bigger races like the Giro d'Italia and the Tour the France.

"Due to the situation in Italy, we are a little more worried about the Giro than before," said Lappartient to news agency Reuters. "There is a potential risk that the Giro can't go ahead.

"Of course we hope that both races can just happen. It would be a disaster for our sports if the Giro and the Tour couldn't take place."

Lappartient is hopeful about both races, and he also thinks that the virus that causes the Covid-19 can decrease its peak before the second grand tour of the year. "Perhaps the two-month period between the Giro and the Tour will be good," he explained.

"Hopefully the peak will have been reached by that time and the number of infections will decrease."
