Arkea-Samsic's Nairo Quintana has taken an emphatic win at the last stage of Paris-Nice. The rider also discussed the coronavirus situation at the end of the race.
Quintana launched a strong attack in the last kilometres of the stage and crossed the finish line 47 seconds ahead of Tiesj Benoot. The Colombian climbed to the sixth position of the General Classification, a good result considering the time he lost when he crashed on the second stage of the race.
"I always try win like this, with elegance and good attitude," Quintana commented. "I'm very motivated to do things right. I've worked hard and the team has worked well today to try to bring the escapees and try to go for the win.
"I had a big fall that was inevitable, the wind and that crash cost me the General Classification. All the other days I arrived with the favourites and today I knew I had to attack because I wanted to give my team and the staff some joy for the efforts that they have done to do things right. Today was my gift for all them for their work. They know that Nairo demands a lot, but we can see the results.
The Colombian also had a moment to talk about the current world situation with the coronavirus. "Now I'll try to return to Colombia, to be with my family while the situation of the coronavirus gets solved," Quintana explained. "It is important for the world to be aware of everything that's happening.
"Today we finish and put ourselves in quarantine to avoid the virus from spreading. Everybody should listen to the authorities to stop the situation from getting out of control and that everybody can go back to their work very soon."
