Lotto Soudal's Thomas De Gendt has taken his first win of the 2020 season during the coronavirus crisis: in a poll made by the Volta a Catalunya.
The Volta a Catalunya was set to start this Monday, March 23, but the Spanish -and worldwide- crisis of the Covid-19 forced it to be postponed along with the rest of the calendar. The first stage of the race was supposed to be 164.9 kilometres long with a start and finish in Calella and that featured one climb of the first category to the Port de Santa Fe del Montseny.
The Twitter account of the Volta a Catalunya put up a poll asking which rider would have won the first stage of the 2020 race. The options to vote were: De Gendt solo, (Alvaro) Hodeg in a bunch sprint and (Alejandro) Valverde out of a small group.
De Gendt was the favourite for the fans to win the first stage of the race with a percentage of 51.4 percent. The rider also reacted to his first win of the season: a virtual one and after he has already won four real ones.
"First victory of the season," wrote the Belgian in Twitter. "It is virtual but a win is a win. I send all my love to the Volta a Catalunya, one of my favourite races."
