The Director of the Vuelta a España, Javier Guillén, has talked about the necessity of the Tour de France for cycling and the 2020 edition of the race.

In a talk with Spanish radio Marca, the director of the third grand tour of the calendar discussed what he thinks about the challenges that the Tour de France is facing, related to the Covid-19 virus crisis. "I worry about the way it is going to happen," Guillén commented. "The Tour is essential for cycling, the biggest showcase that we have and for those who know about the sport and its numbers, it is the annual biggest sports event.

"It will be a guarantee of stability if it happens. I think it will be held, although the problem will be to know if it will be open or closed. But above all, we need the Tour to happen."

Guillen also discussed the possibility of the Tour moving dates and getting on the days the Vuelta is supposed to happen. "From our side we will try to be generous, as long as all of us fit in the new calendar, we will be generous but being today First of April, I think it is too soon to say anything," he explained.

"We depend on the control of the pandemic on a global scenario. The peloton is international and on top of it this edition of the Vuelta will take off in the Netherlands, goes to France and will also have a moment in Portugal besides Spain. We are affected by this global spirit. All the countries are setting up measures, and we hope that by the time the Vuelta has to start, the world will have solved this crisis."
