Director of the Tour de France Christian Prudhomme closed the door to any possibilities for the grand tour taking place without public.

One week after the French Minister of Sports Roxana Maracineanu said that the government is playing with the possibility of doing the Tour de France 'behind closed doors', the director of the Grand Tour has ruled out that option and keeps hoping that the dates will remain the same after the coronavirus crisis diminishes.

"The Tour de France maintains its dates," said Prudhomme to French sports website Sports Auvergne. "Naturally, this will depend on the evolution of the pandemic. In 'Tour de France' the most important is 'France'. It is the health situation in the country what counts.

"I only wish one thing and that is that the Tour de France will take place this summer. Not only for the Tour de France but if it doesn't take place that would mean that the country is in a catastrophic situation. Obviously, nobody hopes that."

Prudhomme also mentioned that the ASO (organiser of the race) is "currently working with the possibility of other dates. But one thing is certain and it is that the Tour de France will not take place behind closed doors."

The director of the French grand tour said that a decision will be made before the 15th of May.
