Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team) thinks that virtual racing is a good way of spending the time of the cycling calendar suspension.

The Belgian rider won the virtual edition of the Ronde van Vlaanderen/Tour of Flanders last weekend and beat riders like Oliver Naesen (AG2R La Mondiale) and Nicolas Roche (Team Sunweb). With the trouble that many teams are facing -including CCC- due to the coronavirus crisis, virtual racing could be a good way for riders to compete and to give exposure to the sponsors.

"It was beautiful on TV, the fans were enthusiastic and the sponsors got some screen time," said Van Avermaet during a Facebook live event with Belgian broadcaster Sporza . "It would be nice to ride even more virtual races in the coming weeks. I think a lot of big riders would like to do that, because we don't have anything else to do.

"If the races on the road would go again, then I would choose it over the virtual racing. But as long as there are not races, virtual racing gives us an ideal opportunity to show ourselves. I wouldn't do it every day, but it would be nice to do it once a week."

But Van Avermaet still believes that some things can be improved about this way of racing. "The graphics were not yet great during the Ronde," he explained. "I didn't feel like I was on the Paterberg when I looked at the area.

"They also have to ensure that the effect of a slipstream works even better, then it won't become a time trial. It is of course difficult to get it all right in the first attempt. There is also a difference between the trainers, not everyone rides in the same conditions."
