AG2R La Mondiale's Romain Bardet has raised his concerns about the Tour de France, even in the new dates, he doesn't think it can happen.

Bardet, just like most people involved in the world of professional cycling, was excited to hear the news of the reformed calendar for 2020. In this calendar, the Tour de France is set to take place between the 29th of August and the 20th of September.

But the winner of the Polka-Dot Jersey in 2020 has since moderated his enthusiasm. "The euphoria of the first 48 hours gave away to a little more blur," said Bardet to French newspaper Le Monde. "Prudence caught up with me. Let's be honest: at the beginning, I only wanted to hear the fact that they had confidence to maintain the Tour de France. But it remains subject to so many hazards!"

Although the rider agrees with Christian Prudhomme's decision of avoiding a Tour behind closed doors, he doesn't think that even within that scenario the safety of everybody could be guaranteed. "When I see the size of the Tour, I find it hard to believe that a participant is never going to be in contact with a carrier of the virus. So are we going to carry the virus around the country for three weeks, without even knowing it?

"Let's be honest: the peloton is a nest of potential contamination. We breathe in it, we touch each other, we sweat. In the bus, in our life, nothing is done against that. Massages, contacts in hotel restaurants. It is impossible to comply with all the precautions."

The rider also showed his concerns about the lack of doping controls. "There is another thing that we have to talk about: there are still no doping controls and that is worrisome," he explained. "It's been ages since I had an unexpected check, I prefer not to tell you when. Long before confinement. I am not making any judgement, because the controls are done in an intelligent and strategic way, and I imagine that there is a reason.

"I just wish we could have some fairness in the controls between now and the start of racing."
