The organisation of the Vuelta a España has announced that the 2020 edition of the race will not go through Portugal as planned.

The 15 stage of the race was set to have its finish line located between the localities of Porto and Matosinhos, while the next day the Spanish grand tour was meant to have its start in Viseu. Now those stages will have their itineraries changed with new host cities that have already been approved but will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

"In a situation as exceptional as the one we are currently living, we have to be flexible and understand these kinds of decisions and changes," declared Javier Guillén, director of La Vuelta.

"It’s a shame not to be able to visit Portugal in 2020, but we don’t want this flame to be put out: we will keep this relationship alive, we will maintain and develop the links we have formed, so that we may return to this country that has treated us to well."
