Fenix-Alpecin's Mathieu van der Poel has the intention of also riding in the mountain bike event of the Olympics of Paris 2024.

The Dutchman had his eye in the gold medal of the mountain bike event of Tokyo 2020 but as the games had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, he has had to adjourn this objective as well. But although he hinted that he was going to devote 100% to road cycling after that, he seems to have changed his mind.

In a talk with the Dutch website WielerFlits, Van der Poel confessed that he aims to continue doing mountain bike and cyclocross for a while. "Together with my team Alpecin-Fenix, I have decided to keep doing the unique combination until the Games of Paris," he explained.

"As it stands, I think I will stay doing mountain bike until the Olympic Games of 2024. Then I have three extra years to become world champion in that discipline. For my part, I definitely like it, because I really love that sport."

Van der Poel -who is currently the world champion of cyclocross- aims to ride grand tours in the next years and try to win the world championships of the road and mountain bike. "We can try to do those grand tours in the next two or three years and then I switch to mountain bike," the Dutchman commented.

"In between I can ride a few races of the World Cups that can be combined with a grand tour. I want to maintain that unique combination of three disciplines for as long as possible."
