The General Director of the Vuelta a España Javier Guillen has confessed that he's uncertain about the race for 2020 but that the preparations for it continue.

Guillen was in a virtual meeting with the Association of Sports Journalists of Malaga, Spain, and there he talked about the ways the coronavirus pandemic has affected the calendar and the doubts it puts in the events that are scheduled to happen in 2020. "We are preparing every aspect, the organisation one, the sanitary and the economical," said the director of the Spanish grand tour.

"This is a crisis that is affecting the budgets of all the companies, including our commercial partners, who have announced restrictions, despite their will to continue with the Vuelta. So we have to adapt to this new situation."

The Vuelta a España is set to be held between October 20 and November 8 and Guillen expects it to happen those dates and not later, and he also has his preferences when is about the exceptional challenges it may face. "A race without public is possible, but we don't want that," he explained.

"But I'd rather have a Vuelta with limited access to the public than no Vuelta at all. If we have to test every rider, we will do it, but before that we need to consider all the circumstances [like the quarantine Spain demands to all foreign visitors, Ed]. The peloton of the Vuelta is very international and it would be a problem if all foreign riders would have to be quarantined. I trust that there will be some exceptions."
