In two separate incidents, Groupama-FDJ's Arnaud Demare and Trek-Segafredo's Elynor Backstedt suffered fractures during training.

The former French national champion crashed during a mountain bike training ride close to his house in the region of Picardy. The rider broke the scaphoid of his left hand and will have to be off the bike for two weeks.

"It was a stupid fall," said Marc Madiot, manager of Groupama-FDJ. "Anyway, it's better that this happens now and not in two months."

Earlier in the year, the sprinter had to spend an eleven-day quarantine at the team's hotel in the United Arab Emirates after several cases of coronavirus were discovered in the peloton at the UAE Tour. Then he returned to France, where he had to also spend some time of lockdown until recently, when riders can go out again for training rides.

British rider Backstedt -who has only started in two races in her first year in the women's WorldTour- was a victim of a training crash in which she suffered a spiral fracture of the tibia.

Trek-Segafredo informed through a Tweet that the 18-year-old will undergo surgery on the fracture but any further detailes will be revealed whenever is possible.
