Groupama-FDJ's Arnaud Demare has confirmed that he has to undergo surgery due to the training accident he recently had.

The Frenchman crashed close to his house in the region of Picardy during a mountain bike training ride a few days ago. Demare suffered a scaphoid fracture on his left hand and the first diagnosis pointed out at a short recovery time.

But the rider has now confirmed that he will have to go under the knife to fix the fracture but this won't affect the plans he had for the new calendar, that was announced a some weeks ago after the season had to be stopped by the coronavirus pandemic.

"It’s an unfortunate event but it will not change the fact that I will race again in August," said the former French national champion to the British news agency Reuters.

Earlier in the year, the sprinter -who took the victory at the 2016 Milano-Sanremo and has won three stages of Paris-Nice- had to spend an eleven-day quarantine at the team's hotel in the United Arab Emirates after several cases of coronavirus were discovered in the peloton at the UAE Tour. Then he returned to France, where he had to also spend some time of lockdown until recently, when professional cyclists can go out again for training rides.
