Rumours from the country point out at a start of the 2020 Giro d'Italia in Palermo, Sicily.

The Italian grand tour was affected by the stop of the calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic. The race was supposed to start in Budapest, Hungary, but this plans had to be scrapped as consequence of the current situation in Europe and in the world.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica said that the race will instead start in Palermo with a time trial, before the stage of Monreale to Agrigento -which was set to be the first one in the country's territory according to the original plans. This would put the grande partenza in Sicily on the third of October.

"The first Italian stage was scheduled for May 12, with a start in Monreale," said the mayor of the town Alberto Arcidiacono to the newspaper. "Now we are waiting for the official confirmation that the Giro 2020 will really happen in October and that we can have the start of that stage. It would be a great opportunity for Monreale after a period of darkness."

The stage after the one from Moreale to Agrigento was going to take the peloton from Enna to the Mount Etna, with the first mountain finish of this edition of the race. After this, the Italian grand tour would move out of Sicily with a stage from Catania to Villafranca Tirrena.

The 2020 Giro d'Italia is set to start on the third of October and finish on the 25th, on the same date as Paris-Roubaix and the sixth stage of the Vuelta a España.
