Drops' April Tacey took the victory of the first stage of the Virtual Tour de France by winning the final sprint against Tibco-Silicon Valley Bank's Kristen Faulkner.

The men's and women's pelotons covered four laps on a 9.1-kilometre circuit in the Zwift platform that emulated the outskirts of Nice, the city in which the real Tour de France will start on the 29th of August. The route was hilly and the women tackled before the men did it later on the day.

Erica Magnalidi (Ceratizit-WNT) was the first rider to make a move on the race, and she took the first points for the Queen of the Mountain during the first lap. But in the next two ascents, Joscelin Lowden (Drops) took the lead in the next two climbs, while Magnaldi got to her once again in the last ascent.

A small group caught the two riders in the final two kilometres and Tacey was the fastest at the final metres, taking the victory ahead of Faulkner. Lowden finished in the eight position of the day and this helped the team Drops to lead the general classification with 71 points.

Tacey took the virtual Yellow Jersey, Canyon-SRAM took the green one of the points' classification, while Drops leads the Queen of the Mountains standings and Canyon-SRAM the youth classification. Trek-Segafredo's Elisa Longo Borghini was chosen the most combative rider of the first stage.
