Ryan Gibbons (NTT Pro Cycling) has sprinted to victory at the first stage of the first ever virtual Tour de France.

The competition took place on the Zwift platform and 23 of the best teams in the world were at the start line. NTT Pro Cycling were at the first stage of the grand tour with Ryan Gibbons, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, Edvald Boasson Hagen and Rasmus Tiller.

The stage was 36.4 kilometre long over a hilly route that resembles the outskirts of the French city of Nice, where the real Tour de France is set to start on September 29. The riders of the South African team made sure to take points in the intermediate competitions and with the main objective of winning the final sprint and taking the Yellow Jersey.

Ineos' Pavel Sivakov and CCC Team's Greg Van Avermaet tried to go early in the finish but were caught soon by the rest of the group. Boasson Hagen -who was chosen the most combative rider of the day- did a perfect lead-out for Gibbons, who crossed the finish line ahead of Pier-Andre Cote (Rally Cycling) and Nico Schulz (Mitchelton-Scott).

The South African champion took the Yellow Jersey, Mitchelton Scott topped the points classification, Alpecin-Fenix took the Polka-Dot Jersey and Rally Cycling leads the youth standings.

"I'm truly overwhelmed and this is quite special," said Gibbons. "Every race our team lines up for, whether it's out on the road or virtual, we do so with a lot of planning, structure and goals. No doubt we will be going to the next 5 stages trying to replicate today's success.

"A massive thanks to everyone involved for providing such a platform, not only for us riders to race but for our partners and cycling fans around the world too, to have racing again which is pretty exciting. To do all of this for a good cause, the Tour de France united campaign which is supporting 5 cycling based charities around the world, one of which is Qhubeka and close to our hearts, is fantastic."
