The Union Europeenne de Cyclisme (UEC) has announced that the Road European Championships of 2020 will take place in the city of Plouay, France.

The original plan for 2020 was for the championships to be held in Trentino, Italy from the 9th to the 13th of September. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided that they would be postponed to 2021 in the same city and on the optional dates of the first to the fifth of September or the eight to the 12th of September.

After talks of the UEC with the French Cycling Federation, it was decided for the city of Plouay to host the championships in 2020. The city in the heart of Britanny is no stranger to cycling events as it has hosted over 80 editions of the Bretagne Classic Ouest-France, as well as the GP de Plouay-Lorient Agglomeration Trophee WNT for the Women's Elite and the UCI Road World Championships in 2000.

Although the details of the competitions still have to be unveiled, it is known that the championships will start with the Men's and Women's Individual Time Trial on Monday, August 24, will continue with the Women's U23 and Men's Elite Road races on Wednesday, August 26, the Men's U23 and Women's Elite Road race on Thursday, August 27 and will close on Friday, August 28 with the Mixed Relay.

This schedule will allow the riders to be at their National Championships -which are set to be held in most European countries on August 23- and then travel to Nice for the start of the Tour de France on August 29.

"In view of the especially difficult season because of the Covid-19 health crisis, being able to stage the European Road Championships is undoubtedly a great source of achievement and pride," said Rocco Cattaneo, President of the UEC. "Since the start of the health crisis that has affected the whole word, we have worked tirelessly to try and save, as far as possible, scheduled events and following the postponement of the Trento Championships (Italy) in 2021, we initiated a series of contacts in order not to lose our major event.

"The organising committee of the city of Plouay, who we would like to sincerely thank, is a team of passionate, organised and professional people. Their experience in terms of the organisation of major events is a guarantee for the success of the European Championships that will held this year in close co-operation with the Bretagne Classic Ouest-France planned on Tuesday 25 August."
