UAE Team Emirates' General Manager Josean Fernandez "Matxin" has talked about the ways the team dealt with the coronavirus pandemic and what is to come in the season.

The Emirati team was one of the first ones to have positive cases for Covid-19, after the UAE Tour. "Everything exploded at the UAE Tour, the race was suspended and it opened our eyes about the importance of it all," said Matxin to Spanish cycling website Biciciclismo. "It seemed at first like if they were overreacting, but then we realised that they weren't. In the UAE we did a voluntary quarantine, when we already had the OK to go, and we decided not to go to Paris-Nice, and it seemed a bit excessive, but at the end we were right.

"At the moment when (Max) Richeze and Fernando (Gaviria) had a positive test after we had their tests from three days before that didn't show anything, we realised that we were right. Because if we had gone to Paris-Nice, everything would have been a lot more dramatic."

The team has big ambitions for the future. "We intend to be, I don't know if in one year or two or three, the best team in the world," the manager said. "It is difficult, and we have to respect the rivals. Ineos has been there for a long time and it is a huge structure, Jumbo-Visma is growing at an immense pace... We know it is complicated, but we also need to have big objectives to try to achieve them."

Matxin also talked about the rosters facing the grand tours, as it was stated before, Fabio Aru, Tadej Pogacar, Davide Formolo and David de la Cruz will be at the Tour de France. "It is an important quartet in which each of them will have their own responsibility and importance," he explained. "Aru will be the main leader because he is the most experienced one.

"Pogacar goes to a race that he doesn't know and that it is absolutely different from everything else. The objective for him is to learn and to see how far he can get, without any pressure. It is clear that De La Cruz will have a bigger role in the Vuelta (a España) because the original idea was for him to do Giro (d'Italia) and Vuelta but with the changes in the calendar, we have decided for another program. I have asked him to be more for the team in the Tour and in the Vuelta he will have all my support, as always."
