UAE Team Emirates' Fernando Gaviria has taken the victory of the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos.

The second stage of the Spanish race was 168 kilometres long between Castrojeriz and Villadiego over a completely flat route that was bound to finish in a bunch sprint. The escape of the day was formed by five riders that managed to create a gap of more than four minutes with the pack.

The last of the escapees was caught with 15 kilometres to go and teams like Bora-hansgrohe, NTT Pro Cycling and Deceuninck-Quick-Step took the front of the peloton to set a high rhythm. At the last curve there was a crash that managed to cause havoc in the pack and soon after, Gaviria launched a very strong sprint that allowed him to cross the finish line by himself.

The Colombian rider managed to take the victory despite missing part of his sprint train before the stage as his three Colombian teammates were taken out of the race and isolated after being in contact on the last days with a person that tested positive for Covid-19 the day before.

Gaviria and his teammate Max Richeze suffered from Covid-19 at the end of the UAE Tour and this strong attack shows he is back at the top of his form. Arnaud Demare (UAE Team Emirates) and Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) completed the top three of the day, while Bora-hansgrohe's Felix Grossschartner maintained the lead of the General Classification.
