The organisation of the Tour de l'Avenir has announced that the 2020 edition of the race will not be held.

The Alpes Velo organisation has decided to cancel the 57th edition of the race, which was set to be from the 14th to the 19th of August, having been reduced to six days due to the rescheduling that had to be done due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This decision was taken on the basis of responsibility when, unlike the main players in professional cycling, and in particular the World Tour and the Tour de France (scheduled from 29 August to 20 September), it seems complex to scrupulously ensure that all health precautions are respected in the context of an event that was due to welcome 23 teams, most of them national selections from the European, African, Asian and American continents," said the organisation through a statement. "The disparity in the health guarantees taken prior to the event, and the need for a 'hermetic bubble' within these formations from regions of the world with different levels of awareness, risked affecting the absolute priority that must be given to health conditions."

The Alpes Velo organisation regrets that it had to take this decision as this race is considered a showcase for the U23 talents and was to be the first round of the 2020 UCI Nations Cups. But the organisation is already looking forward to the 2021 edition of the race, which will be of ten days in August and will have a Grand Start in Charleville-Mezieres.

The Tour de l'Avenir has been won by riders like Tadej Pogacar, Egan Bernal, Miguel Angel Lopez, Warren Barguil, Esteban Chaves, Nairo Quintana, Bauke Mollema and Miguel Indurain, among others.
