Mitchelton-Scott's Annemiek van Vleuten has taken the victory of Strade Bianche, her second victory in a row in the race and the fifth of the season so far.

The opening of the season's restart for the women's WorldTour was 136 kilometres with a start and finish in Siena. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (CCC-Liv) and Ella Harris (Canyon-SRAM) weren't at the start line as they both crashed the day before and the injuries didn't allow them to compete today.

As was expected, the race was extremely hot and the gravel sectors were clouds of dust. On the fifth sector of gravel, former World Champion Anna van den Breggen (Boels-Dolmans) and Lizzie Deignan (Trek-Segafredo) set a high pace and managed to break the pack into pieces, leaving only 20 riders in front.

Some riders managed to return to the front group, but soon a new movement created an escape group that included riders like Mavi Garcia (Ale BTC Ljubljana), Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton-Scott), Soraya Paladin (CCC-Liv), and Ellen van Dijk (Trek-Segafredo), among others. With 46 kilometres, García attacked and created a considerable gap with the rest.

Around ten kilometres later and as she saw that the gap was only increasing, Van Dijk -who was riding on the bike of fellow countryman and teammate Koen de Kort as hers was stolen the night before- decided to take things in her hands and changed the pace to chase the Spaniard, but was soon rejoined by the other chasers.

With around 17 kilometres to go, world champion Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) caught the chasers and during the next gravel sector, she left them behind to go on to catch Garcia by herself. With six kilometres to go, the Dutchwoman caught the Spaniard and the two of them continued together.

Just after the Flamme Rouge, Van Vleuten accelerated and left Garcia behind. The Dutchwoman crossed the finish line by herself for the second time in a row, while García and Leah Thomas completed the final podium of the race. This is the fifth victory of the world champion in five races of the 2020 season.
