Damiano Caruso (Bahrain McLaren) has taken the victory of the Spanish Circuito de Getxo.

The Spanish 1.1. race took the riders through a 177-kilometre route with a start and finish in Getxo, in the Basque Country. The peloton faced a lot of rain but an escape group of eight was created soon after the real start.

UAE Team Emirates was the main team to control the speed of the pack to avoid any surprises from the front group. The last of the escapees was caught with 20 kilometres to go and many attacks happened but without consequences. During the climb of Pike Bidea, newly introduced in this edition of the race, Pello Bilbao (Bahrain McLaren) set a high rhythm that managed to leave some riders struggling behind.

There was an attack from Biniam Ghirmay Hailu (Nippo Delko One Provence) with 12 kilometres to go that was followed by Bilbao, Caruso, Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar). Soon after, the Italian of Bahrain McLaren made a move that eventually gave him the victory of the race.

"It is a great feeling," said Caruso. "I got this victory after a very long period of time, and I am really proud of myself and proud of my teammates. They helped me really a lot during the race and the guys have done an amazing job. I had a good feeling with my bike, and a good feeling for racing, so in the end, I found the right moment for taking this victory.

"I went lap by lap and the feeling was getting better and better. My attack wasn’t in a plan but the selection was done at the last steep climb I said to myself, why not to make the difference now. And at the end I was lucky and I made the right decision in the ideal moment for the uphill finish. My next races are Milano-Sanremo and Dauphine and I’m looking towards to those big races after today’s victory."
