Michael Matthews is set to lead Team Sunweb at Milano-Sanremo, the first Monument of the unusual 2020 season.

The race was set to be in March, but with the Covid-19 pandemic it had to be suspended along the rest of the season. Now that the calendar has restarted, the race will be held in the summer over a 299-kilometre route that has suffered slight changes in comparison with previous editions.

The Australian Matthews will headline Sunweb in the race and the formation will have other two riders that can play a big part depending on the development of the competition. "Milano-Sanremo will have a different character now the Turchino, coastline and Capi are no longer on the parcours," said Team Sunweb coach Marc Reef. "We will have to see what kind of influence it will have on the day, but normally the race will be decided on the Cipressa and Poggio.

"Teams arriving with only six riders could make the race more open, and we need to be ready to cover dangerous moves at any moment. We have a strong line-up with Michael as our leader who will do his first race since the season pause, and together with Tiesj and Søren we are ready for all possible scenarios."

Sunweb's line-up for Milano-Sanremo (August 8):

Søren Kragh Andersen (DEN)
Nikias Arndt (GER)
Tiesj Benoot (BEL)
Cees Bol (NED)
Michael Matthews (AUS)
Jasha Sütterlin (GER)
