Russian national champion Aleksandr Vlasov has taken an impressive victory at the Mont Ventoux Denivele Challenge.

The one day race took the riders between Vaison-la-Romaine and the Mont Ventoux over a 179-kilometre route. Teams like Astana, Trek-Segafredo and Cofidis took control of the pace of the pack in order to put their leaders in a good place ahead the last kilometrs of the iconic climb.

In the middle of the climb, it was clear that Miguel Angel Lopez was not going to fight for the victory as he was dropped for the group. Astana continued setting a pace and with four kilometres to go, Vlasov attacked, caught the riders that had escaped and continued on his own to grab the victory.

Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) completed the podium of the race. "I’m very happy to win at this famous mountain!" said Vlasov at the end of the stage. "It was really fantastic! My team did a great job for me during the whole race, and at the final part, I gave my best, as well. When I saw that other riders started to look tired I decided to attack and tried myself.

"Then, when I saw that there was nobody on my wheel, I was really motivated and managed to make this attack until the finish. It is a great victory for me! I’m happy with my shape now, I had a really good legs today. I want to say thanks to all my teammates for impressive work and to our main partner “Samruk – Kazyna” for support!"
