Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) has taken the victory of the second stage at the Tour de l'Ain and has climbed to the top of the general classification.

The second day of competition in the French race took the riders through a 140.5-kilometre mountainous route between Lagnieu and Lelex Monts-Jura that featured four climbs of the second category, including the climbing finale. This stage managed to show how the competition between the strongest teams of the pack can look like during the Tour de France.

During the penultimate climb, Jumbo-Visma took control of the pace of the peloton and the work of Tom Dumoulin, Robert Gesink and George Bennett managed to break it into pieces, which also meant that Egan Bernal was left by himself. At the end of that climb, Roglic still had Bennett and Steven Kruijswijk, and other riders like Nairo Quintana and Bauke Mollema could also resist the rhythm.

Kruijswijk launched several attacks during the last climb that were neutralised by the rest and it all came up to a mountain sprint in which the Slovenian national champion managed to take the victory. The rider also took the lead of the general classification of the race, where he sits ten seconds ahead of Bernal, 12 seconds ahead Valerio Conti (UAE Team Emirates) and 18 seconds ahead of Quintana.
